IBM

The halt at IBM was opened on 9 May 1978 by British Rail. It served what was then a thriving
computer manufacturing plant employing over 4,000 people.

Originally, the stop was advertised only to IBM staff and only peak time services stopped there. It was included in the public timetable from
12 May 1986, with all trains stopping daily. It was impossible to leave the platform after the factory had closed

The factory closed and the last few IBM staff left the site in October 2016. The trains continued stopping until December 2018, despite there being no public
access. The station has not gone through the legal closure procedure and is not officially considered to be closed, just ‘out of use’. It is hoped that it will re-open as a park and ride facility when the IBM site is redeveloped.
